First, review basic concepts to understand how circuit integration of new neurons alter the basic scheme of information flow in the hippocampus, and as evidence will demonstrate, how electrical activity of the hippocampus controls the development and integration of new neurons.
Stay tuned, as the second half of the webinar will focus on Dr Schinder’s most recent work on the role of immature neurons in information processing in the adult hippocampus by combining optogenetics and electrophysiology in brain slices.
Dr Alejandro Schinder is a Principal Investigator at the Leloir Institute (CONICET) in Buenos Aires. He received his degree at the University of Buenos Aires in 1990, and in 1996 he received his PhD at the University of California San Diego, after working in the mechanisms involving calcium and mitochondria in excitotoxicity.
Alejandro then joined the lab of Professor Mu-ming Poo,of the same department, as a postdoctoral fellow, to study synaptogenesis and synaptic plasticity. He carried out a second postdoctoral training in Fred Gage’s lab at the Salk Institute to work in adult neurogenesis.
In 2002, Alejandro started his own group at the Leloir Institute in Buenos Aires, which focuses on hippocampal neurogenesis and the role of adult-born neurons in brain plasticity and information processing.
