Biological function summary
This kinase helps regulate apoptosis and cell proliferation. As a part of the Hippo signaling pathway STK4/MST1 operates within a cascade of interactions involving multiple cellular proteins. It forms a complex with other proteins such as SAV1 and LATS1/2 to execute control over organ size by modulating cell growth and apoptosis. Through these interactions STK4 maintains cellular homeostasis and prevents abnormal cellular developments such as overgrowth.
Pathways
STK4 plays an integral part in the Hippo signaling and MAPK pathways. Within the Hippo pathway it partners with MST2 to phosphorylate downstream effectors which impacts transcription regulation and ultimately cellular proliferation and apoptosis. In the MAPK pathway STK4’s activities interface with those of the YAP and TAZ proteins further linking it to cellular signaling processes that control cell fate decisions.
