Regulator of G protein signaling 7 (RGS7) also known as RGP7 is a member of the R7 family of RGS proteins with a molecular weight of approximately 85 kDa. RGS7 regulates G protein signaling by accelerating the deactivation of Gα subunits through its GTPase-activating protein activity. It is widely expressed in the central nervous system especially in the brain regions like the hippocampus and basal ganglia.
Biological function summary

G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling modulation is an important role of RGS7. It forms a complex with the Gβ5 subunit and other anchoring proteins to regulate synaptic transmission and neuronal excitability. This complex localizes to synaptic sites and modifies neurotransmitter release which can influence cognitive functions and behaviors. RGS7 helps in maintaining signal fidelity within neural circuits.
