Biological function summary
Procathepsin W acts as part of the immune system's machinery for degrading proteins. Although it is not directly involved in any known complexes it functions within the acidic environment of lysosomes. As a protease Procathepsin W helps break down proteins into smaller peptides or amino acids enabling the immune system to process antigens or eliminate damaged proteins. Its activity in immune cells indicates its relevance to immune responses aiding in cell killing processes.
Pathways
Procathepsin W plays a role in the antigen processing and presentation pathway which is important for immune surveillance. It interacts with other proteins such as major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules to present peptides to T cells contributing to the adaptive immune response. The enzyme is also indirectly linked to apoptosis through its participation in protein degradation sharing this pathway with other proteases like caspases that facilitate programmed cell death.
