Biological function summary
Motilin controls certain gastrointestinal processes during fasting states. It plays an important role in regulating the MMCs which are important for clearing non-digestible substances from the stomach and small intestine. Despite not being part of a larger complex motilin's effects on gastric and intestinal motility are essential for maintaining gastrointestinal health. The signal from motilin influences smooth muscle contractions and enzyme secretions which are critical for digestive processes.
Pathways
Motilin is an integral part of the motility regulation pathway in the gastrointestinal system. In this pathway it interacts with several key proteins including the motilin receptor which triggers the cascading events leading to muscle contractions. It is also indirectly associated with the ghrelin pathway as ghrelin can augment the effects of motilin although they act through separate receptors.
