Biological function summary
MGST2 impacts cellular defense by aiding in the detoxification of harmful compounds. It operates as part of a larger complex often associating with other glutathione transferases. By facilitating the breakdown of reactive oxygen species and electrophiles MGST2 helps in protecting cells from damage. This protection is especially important in metabolically active tissues where reactive by-products are more frequent.
Pathways
MGST2 is a component of the glutathione metabolism pathway where it collaborates closely with related proteins such as GSTM1 and GSTT1. It also plays a role in the arachidonic acid metabolism pathway. MGST2 interacts with enzymes important for the synthesis of leukotrienes which are signaling molecules involved in the inflammatory response. These pathways highlight MGST2's role in maintaining cellular homeostasis and responding to stress.

Catalyzes the glutathione-dependent reduction of lipid hydroperoxides, such as 5-HPETE (PubMed : 23409838, PubMed : 9278457). Has glutathione transferase activity, toward xenobiotic electrophiles, such as 1-chloro-2, 4-dinitrobenzene (CDNB) (PubMed : 23409838, PubMed : 8703034). Catalyzes also the conjugation of leukotriene A4 with reduced glutathione to form leukotriene C4 (LTC4) (PubMed : 23409838, PubMed : 26656251). Involved in oxidative DNA damage induced by ER stress and anticancer agents by activating LTC4 biosynthetic machinery in nonimmune cells (PubMed : 26656251).
