TRIM31 also known as Tripartite Motif Containing 31 is a protein that has a mass of approximately 45 kDa. It belongs to the TRIM family characterized by a RING finger domain one or two B-box domains and a coiled-coil region. These domains allow TRIM31 to participate in ubiquitin E3 ligase activity where it catalyzes the transfer of ubiquitin to substrate proteins. Typically it is expressed in tissues such as the liver lung and intestine and plays a role in protein homeostasis by regulating protein degradation.
Biological function summary

TRIM31 functions in cellular processes such as the innate immune response and cell proliferation. It interacts with important cellular complexes that modulate innate immunity signifying its contribution to antiviral responses. TRIM31 regulates the degradation of certain proteins involved in these processes which can influence how cells respond to viral infections or cellular stress. Furthermore by controlling protein turnover TRIM31 contributes to cellular homeostasis and defense mechanisms against pathogens.

Pathways

TRIM31 has significant involvement in the NF-κB signaling pathway as well as the autophagy pathway. Within the NF-κB pathway TRIM31 can influence the activity of key proteins like IκBα by tagging them for degradation which in turn affects NF-κB activity and controls inflammatory responses. In the autophagy pathway TRIM31 associates with proteins like Beclin1 where it plays a role in modulating autophagic flux and maintaining cellular homeostasis during stress conditions.

TRIM31 has associations with cancer and viral infections. Aberrant expression of TRIM31 has been observed in certain cancers including hepatocellular carcinoma where its interaction with proteins like p53 might contribute to unchecked cell proliferation and tumor growth. Additionally TRIM31 has been linked to antiviral defense mechanisms where its role in modulating immune responses provides insights into how the body fights viral infections such as those implicated in influenza by managing the activities of proteins like MAVS.
