A) Nuclear extract (10 and 20 μg) from HeLa cells.

Detection : Chemiluminescence with exposure times of less than 2 minutes.

Biological function summary
SMC5 influences the maintenance of genomic integrity during cell division. It is an essential component of the SMC5/6 complex which also includes non-SMC proteins like NSMCE1-4. The complex facilitates proper segregation of chromosomes by stabilizing replication forks and resolving DNA interlinkages. This mechanism is key in preventing genomic instability which can lead to diverse cellular dysfunctions.
Pathways
SMC5 is involved in the DNA damage response and homologous recombination repair pathways. It interacts with proteins like RAD51 which plays a role in the repair of double-strand breaks through homologous recombination. These pathways ensure that damaged DNA is accurately repaired preventing erroneous sequences from propagating during subsequent cell divisions.
