Biological function summary
SLC3A1 is integral to the reabsorption of cystine and dibasic amino acids in renal and intestinal epithelial cells. It is a part of the cystine-dibasic amino acid transporter complex functioning alongside the light chain protein SLC7A9. This interaction ensures the effective transport of key molecules necessary for maintaining amino acid homeostasis within the body. By forming a dimer with SLC7A9 SLC3A1 helps regulate amino acid flux essential for normal cell function and metabolism.

SLC3A1 is actively involved in amino acid transport pathways particularly those specialized in neutral and dibasic amino acids.
