The PREX1 protein also known as phosphatidylinositol 345-trisphosphate-dependent Rac exchange factor 1 operates as a guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF). It facilitates the activation of the small GTPase RAC1 by exchanging GDP for GTP. The protein has a molecular mass of approximately 185 kDa. PREX1 is widely expressed in various tissues with higher levels observed in brain heart and leukocytes. Additionally it contains several distinct domains including the DH domain responsible for its GEF activity PH domain for lipid binding and DEP domain aiding in signaling pathway integration.
Biological function summary

PREX1 plays a fundamental role in modulating cellular processes such as cell migration growth and survival. It interacts with RAC1 enabling the restructuring of the actin cytoskeleton and promoting cell motility. PREX1 does not only function in isolation but is often found within complexes that influence RAC1 activity. It cooperates with proteins like PI3K (phosphoinositide 3-kinase) enhancing downstream signaling events integral to cellular function.

Pathways
