Plasma cells also referred to as antibody-producing cells are a type of differentiated B lymphocytes. These cells produce large amounts of antibodies and have a critical role in the immune response. Plasma cells are typically found in the bone marrow after they migrate from the lymphoid tissues where they undergo differentiation. Each plasma cell has unique antibodies that are specific to different antigens. Plasma cells are relatively large roughly 14-20 micrometers in diameter and they exhibit a high cytoplasmic volume due to rough endoplasmic reticulum abundance needed for antibody synthesis.
Biological function summary

Plasma cells synthesize and secrete antibodies which are important for identifying and neutralizing pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. These cells play an essential role in humoral immunity one of the main pathways of the adaptive immune system. Plasma cells are often part of multimolecular complexes due to their association with various immune components to create a coordinated immune response. The antibodies secreted by plasma cells bind to antigens marking them for destruction by other immune cells.

Pathways

Plasma cells are integral to the adaptive immune response and play a central role in the IgG and IgA isotype switching pathways. These pathways lead the change of antibody classes to target pathogens more effectively. Plasma cells interact closely with T-helper cells which release cytokines that influence plasma cell function and antibody production. This interaction ensures effective communication and response to specific antigens within the immune system.

Plasma cells are associated with multiple myeloma and Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia which are types of blood cancer. In multiple myeloma plasma cells grow uncontrollably leading to the overproduction of a single type of weak antibody. This causes various complications and weakens the immune system. Plasma cells in these conditions also have connections to related proteins like beta-2 microglobulin which serve as a marker to monitor disease progression. Understanding plasma cells and their roles can help in developing therapeutic approaches for these conditions.
