Biological function summary
NRL acts as an important regulator in photoreceptor cell differentiation and function. It forms complexes with other transcription factors such as CRX and NR2E3 to activate transcription of rod-specific genes. These complexes are important for the expression of genes necessary for phototransduction the process by which light is converted into electrical signals in the eyes. NRL's interactions target important retinal genes establishing its role as a determinant for rod versus cone cell fates.
Pathways
The activity of NRL is integrated into the phototransduction and retinoid metabolism pathways. Within these pathways NRL cooperates with other proteins like CRX and NR2E3 to control the expression of genes needed for rod photoreceptor function. NRL's orchestration of gene expression in these pathways assures the successful transduction of light signals and vitamin A recycling which are reactions critical for vision.
