Biological function summary
The gD protein engages with specific cellular receptors like nectin-1 HVEM and others for initiating viral infection. This interaction facilitates the fusion of the viral envelope with the host cell membrane. Glycoprotein D is a part of the larger complex of herpesvirus envelope glycoproteins which work together to enable efficient cell entry and subsequent viral propagation. This coordination within the protein complex ensures the proper attachment and penetration of host cells.
Pathways
The gD proteins interact critically within pathways necessary for viral fusion and entry. Their relationship with proteins like glycoproteins B and H/L within the herpes virus entry mechanism is especially important. Glycoprotein B for example acts after gD-receptor binding to promote the fusion of viral and cell membranes.
