    S.aureus binds IgG molecules by their Fc region. In serum, the bacteria will bind IgG molecules in the wrong orientation on their surface, which hinders opsonization and phagocytosis. Mutants of S. aureus lacking protein A are more efficiently phagocytosed in vitro, and mutants in infection models have diminished virulence. Due to its affinity for the Fc region of many mammalian immunoglobulins, protein A is considered a universal reagent in biochemistry and immunology.

    Good afternoon,

    I am doing research about Staphylococcus aureus cell wall proteins epitopes and I am working in Western blotting and ELISA. I need a monoclonal antibody against Staphylococcus aureus cell wall proteins that should be specific for this bacteria only and shouldn't have any cross reactivity with any other staphylococcus, as epidermidis or other CNS = coagulase negative staphylococcus.

    If they were tested for ELISA, for instance, and not for western, it is OK.

    Have you got any monoclonal Ab which responds to these requirements?

    If not, could you advise me where can I find it?

    I havecontacted the source for all the Staphylococcus aureus antibodies we have that have been tested in WB and/or ELISA to ask if they have been tested for crossreactivity. Here is the information:

    ab20002 Anti-Staphylococcus aureus antibody [702]

    This antibody specifically recognizes peptidoglycan of Staphyloccus aureus, Protein A-negative Staph. aureus and Staph. epidermidis. It does not cross-react with Streptococcus sp., Mycoplasma sp. or Corynebacteria sp.However, as far as I know it has not been tested with another Staphlococcus strains.

    ab21028 Anti-Staphylococcus aureus antibody [702] (Biotin)

    This is the biotinylated version of ab20002 with the same specificity and cross-reactivity data.

    ab37644 Anti-Staphylococcus aureus antibody [704]

    This antibody reacts with Staphyloccus aureus, Protein A-negative Staph. aureus and Staph. epidermidis. Does not cross-react with Corynebacteria sp., Streptococcus sp. or Mycoplasma sp. Again, as far as I know it has not been tested with another Staphlococcus strains.

    ab68952 Anti-Staphylococcus aureus antibody (HRP)

    The only other strain of Staphylococcus that this antibody has been tested is Staph. albus, which does cross-react. However, we believe that it will probablycross-react with other strains of Staph. bacterium because the full bacteria proteome is used as the immunogen.

    ab73962 Anti-Staphylococcus aureus antibody

    Reactivity of this antibody is confirmed for Staphylococcus aureus. We do not know about reactivity of other strains.

    I am sorry we regrettably do not have an antibody from the catalog that we can confirm will definitely not detect other strains of Staphylococcus. However, I hope this is helpful. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

    Please find below the information I managed to collect by contacting the sources of the Anti-Staphylococcus aureusand the Anti-Streptococcus agalactiaeantibodies we have in our catalog :

    Anti-Staphylococcus aureus:
    https://www.abcam.com/ab23568 shows no reactivity to any streptococcus sp., mycoplasma sp. or corynebacteria sp.

    Unfortunately, ab35192 has not been specifically tested against streptococcus so we are unable to guarantee it won’t react to S. agalactiae.

    ab68950, ab68952, ab68954: These Staphylococcus aureus polyclonal antibodies are not absorbed for related microorganisms and so therefore could cross react with related bacteria such as Staph. Epidermidis.

    MLS : Staphylococcus aureus: We do not have an antibody that is specific to Staph. aureus but does not have crossreactivity to Staph. epidermidis.

    Anti-Streptococcus agalactiae:
    https://www.abcam.com/ab21126 has weak crossreactivity with Strep. dysgalactiae and does not cross-react with Strep. uberis, Strep. bovis, Strep. faecalis, Staph. aureus, Mycoplasma bovis, Mycoplasma californicum, Mycoplasma bovigenitalium, E. coli or Corynebacterium bovis.
