The ELYS protein also known as MEL-28 is a critical component of the nuclear pore complexes (NPCs) and plays an important role in nuclear envelope assembly. ELYS is approximately 240 kDa in mass and is expressed in various tissues with significant presence in dividing cells. ELYS facilitates the recruitment of nucleoporins to chromatin which is necessary for the formation of NPCs during cell division.
Biological function summary

ELYS protein associates as part of the nuclear pore complex. It functions as a nucleoporin that mediates the interaction between chromatin and NPC components. This interaction is essential for the reassembly of the nuclear envelope and the reestablishment of nucleocytoplasmic transport after mitosis. ELYS acts through its AT-hook domains allowing it to bind to chromatin.

ELYS integrates into mechanisms involving nuclear envelope reformation and nucleocytoplasmic transport pathways. It associates with key proteins in these pathways including NUP107-160 complex establishing a functional connection between chromatin and the forming NPCs. Required for the assembly of a functional nuclear pore complex (NPC) on the surface of chromosomes as nuclei form at the end of mitosis. May initiate NPC assembly by binding to chromatin and recruiting the Nup107-160 subcomplex of the NPC. Also required for the localization of the Nup107-160 subcomplex of the NPC to the kinetochore during mitosis and for the completion of cytokinesis.
