mRNA and protein expression of retinoid-metabolizing cytochrome P450 enzymes.(A) Relative mRNA expression levels of Cyp2s1 and Cyp2e1 in AF-HSCs (solid bars) and GFP-HSCs (stripped bars) are shown. Values are normalized to 18S and given as the mean ±1 S.D. for 5 AF and 5 GFP HSC isolations. Significance was determined by a Student's t-test, ** p-value<0.01. (B) Protein levels of CYP2S1 and CYP2E1 in AF-HSCs and GFP-HSCs. Experiments were repeated with similar results.

Biological function summary
CYP2S1 plays an essential role in drug metabolism and the detoxification of chemicals. It participates in the processing of endogenous and exogenous compounds and operates alongside other members of the cytochrome P450 family. While CYP2S1 is not part of a conventional multi-protein complex its interactions with other proteins in the family influence its activity. Its reductase partners assist in electron transfer required for enzyme functionality.
Pathways
CYP2S1 is involved in pathways associated with xenobiotic metabolism and the degradation of specific fatty acids. It functions in these pathways by acting on substrates introduced by diet or environmental exposure. CYP1A1 and CYP2B6 are other cytochrome P450 enzymes that share interactions with CYP2S1 influencing shared metabolic and signaling pathways. This cooperation provides metabolism versatility and regulates substrate-specific detoxification.
