Bmf also known as Bcl-2 modifying factor is important in apoptosis regulation a process of programmed cell death. It acts as a pro-apoptotic protein from the Bcl-2 family. The Bmf protein has a molecular weight of approximately 21 kDa. It is mainly expressed in various epithelial tissues and abundant in hematopoietic cells. Bmf can interact with the dynein light chain at the cytoskeleton which affects its localization and function.
Biological function summary

The protein exerts its function by promoting apoptosis. Bmf binds directly to pro-survival Bcl-2 family members such as Bcl-X_L and Bcl-2 displacing pro-apoptotic proteins like Bax or Bak. This action facilitates the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria triggering caspase activation and cell death.
