Biological function summary
Bacterial alkaline phosphatase participates in dephosphorylation reactions facilitating the release of inorganic phosphate. Its enzymatic activities are important for bacterial growth and metabolism enabling bacteria to utilize extracellular organic phosphates. While not explicitly part of a complex the enzyme interacts with various substrates reflecting its role in dynamic regulatory processes within the bacterial cell. It plays a particularly important part during phosphate starvation as it allows bacteria to scavenge phosphate from different organic groups.
Pathways
Bacterial alkaline phosphatase integrates into the phosphorus assimilation and recycling pathways essential for cellular function and survival. In the phosphate acquisition pathway it works in conjunction with proteins like PhoR and PhoB that regulate the expression of phosphate-responsive genes. Its action ensures the maintenance of phosphate homeostasis which in turn influences broader bacterial physiological processes. Direct interaction with PhoA and PhoU aids the regulation of phosphate uptake in bacteria through the two-component system.
