補足情報

This supplementary information is collated from multiple sources and compiled automatically.

Basal bodies are structural organelles that serve as the microtubule-organizing centers of cilia and flagella. Also known as basal granules or kinetosomes basal bodies form the base from which the axoneme of the cilia or flagella extends. They possess a cylindrical shape composed of nine triplet microtubules arranged akin to centrioles and typically share a similar molecular mass. These structures are expressed ubiquitously in ciliated cells across various tissues such as the respiratory epithelium and the ventricular ependyma highlighting their ubiquitous presence in multicellular organisms.
Biological function summary

Basal bodies function as critical regulators of cilia formation and maintenance. They play an essential role in positioning and anchoring cilia to the cell surface ensuring proper orientation. Basal bodies are a component of a larger ciliary complex that includes proteins such as dynein arms and the ciliary membrane. These complexes participate in selective protein trafficking facilitating the growth and function of cilia by transporting necessary molecular components.

Pathways

Basal bodies interface with important cellular signaling pathways including the Hedgehog and Wnt pathways. These pathways are important for cell differentiation and developmental processes. Basal bodies interact with proteins such as Gli in the Hedgehog pathway and Dishevelled in the Wnt pathway regulating signal transduction mechanisms critical to maintaining cellular homeostasis.

Basal bodies relate closely to ciliopathic conditions like Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia and Polycystic Kidney Disease. These disorders often arise due to defects in cilia formation and function linked to basal body malfunction. The dysfunction in basal bodies can affect proteins like dynein leading to impaired ciliary motility in disorders such as Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia or defects in cyst formation in Polycystic Kidney Disease.
