Biological function summary
ATL3 participates in the maintenance of the tubular network of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). The protein often acts as a dimer and works similarly to other members of the atlastin family. This dimerization and its involvement in membrane fusion aid in creating and maintaining the three-dimensional structure of the ER which is important for various cellular functions and signaling pathways. ATL3 also contributes to the proper spatial arrangement of organelles inside the cells.
Pathways
ATL3 is actively involved in the endoplasmic reticulum morphogenesis pathways. The protein plays an important role in shaping the ER which impacts lipid metabolism and protein synthesis pathways. It closely interacts with other ER-shaping proteins such as ATL1 and ATL2 assisting in retaining the three-dimensional integrity of the ER network that is essential for efficient cellular functioning and response to stress.
