Biological function summary
Ada protein serves to directly repair methylated DNA lesions which prevents mutation and maintains genetic stability. It often functions as part of a regulatory complex that initiates the expression of other DNA repair enzymes. The Ada protein acts as both a sensor and a regulator by increasing the transcription of genes involved in the adaptive response making it a central player in the cellular defense against alkylating agents.
Pathways
Ada protein's function links closely with the DNA damage repair pathways. It primarily associates with the base excision repair (BER) pathway to correct lesions caused by endogenous and exogenous agents. Its interaction with other components such as the AlkB protein highlights its role in an interconnected network aiming to maintain the integrity of the genetic material.
