    The chemical compound Acetylcholine, often abbreviated as ACh, was the first neurotransmitter to be identified. It is a chemical transmitter in the central nervous system (CNS) as well as in the parasympathetic nervous system in many organisms including humans. When it binds to Acetylcholine receptors of muscle fibers, stimulates those fibers to contract. Acetylcholine is also used in the brain, where it tends to cause excitatory actions.

Thank you, I also wanted to ask about Anti-Acetylcholine antibody (ab34935). Would this work in the same way? ie only detecting bound acetylcholine? I was under the impression that polyclonal antibodies were generated against KLH conjugated to ACh meaning that when added to a prep some of the antibodies generated may be specific for epitopes of the ACh containing part of the KLH-ACh antigen and thus would bind ACh? Or is this incorrect?

Thank you for your inquiry.

You are correct that the immunogen would be Acetylcholine coupled to some carrier. When polyclonal antibodies are generated some will be specific for Acetylcholine.

The antibodies that are specific for the carrier usually will be removed.

All the same, the antibodies against Acetylcholine will still only have a very low (or no) affinity to free Acetylcholine and will only be of use when examining bound Acetylcholine.

In our lab we use a phenol-ethanol supernatant obtained after precipitation of DNA with ethanol, we wonder if we could use this supernatant for the ELISA with acetilcholine and noradrenaline antibodies. The protocols displayed in the internet page, have been usefull. I look forward to your reply.

In either case, I'm not sure if the protein would be recognized by the antibodies since we have not tested this ourselves. We invite you to use our Abreview system.
