Biological function summary
ABCB7 is significant in maintaining cellular iron homeostasis. It integrates into a functional complex responsible for maturing iron-sulfur clusters that are critical for various cellular activities. These iron-sulfur clusters participate in numerous biochemical functions including electron transport and enzyme catalysis. Without their proper supply several cellular processes are compromised leading to metabolic dysfunctions.
Pathways
ABCB7 is integral to the biosynthesis of iron-sulfur clusters and their subsequent incorporation into proteins. This pathway involves essential collaborations with proteins such as frataxin and NFS1. The protein's role in this process affects multiple cellular processes including the mitochondrial electron transport chain and the regulation of cellular oxidative stress which are key components in the maintenance of cellular energy and redox states.
