Streptococcus is a genus of spherical Gram-positive bacteria belonging to the phylum Firmicutes and the lactic acid bacteria group. Hemolytic Streptococcus are grouped into 20 groups from A to V excluding I and J, according to the serological differences of C-polysaccharides possessed by the organism. Among the groups, A, B, C and G have human-pathogenicity and are considered to be epidemiologically important.
Streptococcus Group A (GAS) bacteria are beta-hemolytic and can cause a range of infections, from relatively mild sore throats and skin infections to life-threatening invasive disease. Several virulence factors contribute to the pathogenesis of GAS, such as M protein, hemolysins, and extracellular enzymes.
