Shigella is a non-motile gram-negative bacillus, belonging to the enterobacteriaceae family. Shigella affects the small intestine where it can infect epithelial cells and cause shigellosis characterised by fever, diarrhoea and andominal pain. Shigella is classified into 4 subtypes according to serological properties of the somatic (O) antigens: S.dysenteriae (Subgroup A), S. flexneri (Subgroup B), S.boydii (subgroup C) and S. sonnei (subgroup D). S. dysenteriae is subdivided into 12 different serotypes by antigen type.
