Shigella is a non-motile gram-negative bacillus, belonging to the Enterobactericeae family. The organisms taken in orally invade the epithelial cells of the large intestine causing shigellosis with (mucous and bloody) diarrhea, fever and abdominal pain. Shigella is classified into four species by the serological properties of the somatic antigens (O antigens) and biochemical properties; S. dysenteriae (subgroup A), S. flexneri (subgroup B), S. boydii (subgroup C) and S. sonnei (subgroup D).
S. dysenteriae is classified into 12 serological types by antigen type.
