Salmonella is a group of gram negative, non spore forming, rod shaped bacteria belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family and may cause many types of infections from gastroenteritis to life threatening typhoid fever. Salmonella can be serotyped according to somatic antigens O (group O: O2-O67 groups), surface Vi, phase I and phase II falgellar (H types: H-a to H-z81). The somatic group O antigens are heat stable and are involved in the grouping of the microorganism. The H antigens exist in two phases: phase I and phase II. They are heat labile and usually associated with motility.
