Receptor-like protein tyrosine phosphatases (receptor-
PTPs) represent a family of transmembrane proteins
that may transduce external signals by dephosphorylating
phosphotyrosyl residues on intracellular substrates. As
such, they are thought to play important roles in cellular regulation
in general, and in the control of growth and differentiation
in particular. The receptor-PTPs consist of a
cytoplasmic catalytic region, a single transmembrane segment
and an extracellular, putative ligand-binding domain. The receptor-PTPs show a remarkable diversity in the structure of their N-terminal extracellular domains. RPTPs have been implicated in functions such as cell adhesion and axon growth.
