ab122882 reacts with the Fc epsilon RI subunit on a region that does not overlap the region of the IgE binding site, thus it does not compete with IgE for the receptor binding. Since clone CRA2 (ab122891; ab122915) reacts with the IgE binding site on Fc epsilon RI, it competes with IgE for the receptor binding. Combining the two antibodies, one can quantitatively measure the amounts of the IgE-bound Fc epsilon RI.

Binding of allergen to receptor-bound IgE leads to cell activation and the release of mediators (such as histamine) responsible for the manifestations of allergy. The same receptor also induces the secretion of important lymphokines.
